I see you never got an answer to the two issues. Let me try to help you.

When you call getItem() from the AdminModel, it typically returns false if it cannot find an item with the specified ID. This often happens if the ID is not set or if data is missing.

Ensure that your form's HTML structure correctly specifies the ID as 0 when creating a new record. The form should not include an existing ID unless you're editing.

I can only recommend using a generator for getting started just like CharlieBigley said. I recommend the Component Generator with a single item template which is free and generates 100% native Joomla code. Just follow the link in my signature.

Just do the following:
1) Create the component
2) Generate and download the .zip file
3) Extract the .zip file and learn from it :-)
