If you have access to phpadmin (or similar) for each of the two databases, I suggest you hack your way into the sub-domain.
First check that there is a record in table #__users as you expect, then update the password field using the value copied from the database of the 'live" site.
Alternatively, you can create a new users record on the subdomain and go through the registration process. Once the user has been created you will find it can't log into the backend. However, just make this new user a SuperUser by adding a record to table #__user_usergroup_map. Column user_id must be for the new user, and group_id must be 8
